How can I create an environment that positively facilitates Benji, a dual-language learner of Hispanic heritage, in reader’s workshop to ensure literacy understanding?
Why this question?
This caught my attention because my focal child, Benji, is an ENL learner and I realized it was my job to track his progress and the means of finding success in the classroom. At home, his mother speaks only Spanish and his father knows little English. Knowing this, it challenged my view on the role of the teacher. I haven’t thought about all the lesson planning that must go in to incorporating dual-language learners in the classroom. I specifically want to focus on Reader’s Workshop because I am interested in how I, as a teacher, can differentiate my instruction or activities for a classroom of diverse readers. I want to research what helps ENL students make that transformation in the easiest, most efficient and enjoyable way possible. Like Mrs. Argus, I hope to fulfill my ENL teaching degree in the future.
