How can I create an environment that positively facilitates Benji, a dual-language learner of Hispanic heritage, in reader’s workshop to ensure literacy understanding?
What are my next steps?

After researching articles and books on various topics surrounding early elementary ENL students, I gathered the information for my next task: Applications. What try-outs did I want to test in the classroom to initiate and document growth for my focal child? Thus, I narrowed these try-outs as follows:
1. Small Group Instructions with Benji and Mylos.
- Molding letters with Play-Doh from an Alphabet book. The book, Multicultural and Multilingual Literacy and Language, discusses using visuals and physical movement to help ENL students with literacy and letter I.D. (Benji's main difficulty).
- Using Level A books to help enhance reading comprehension and reading tools.
2. I learned that it's important to perform casual interviews with the students in class who are struggling to understand oral direction (Richards). I knew it was crucial to ask Benji multiple questions about his home life, interests, or thoughts about class. This step can lead to a stronger, trusting relationship where he can be more comfortable in his environment.
3. Interview Mrs. Argus about her strategies for Benji and differentiated instruction.
4. Pre-assessments and Post-assessments
- Concepts of Print
- Running Record
- Letter I.D.
